YOU NEED A MEDICAL EXERCISE SPECIALIST
A Medical Exercise Specialist (MES) does not give up on any client because every program is individualized after an assessment and a discussion of your goals.
A MES has a college degree with additional training as a personal trainer or as an exercise physiologist. They take advanced certifications dealing with special populations. This means learning about people who have orthopedic injuries, physical illness, neurological impairments, chronic disease, balance and gait difficulties, strength issues, and coordination deficits.
Doctors have long known that exercise can improve good health. Exercise has been shown to slow aging, improve balance and coordination, and reduce risk factors. People with disabilities can improve their muscle strength, stamina and psychological well being.
Often, by losing weight, in collaboration with an exercise program, a person’s health risks may be reduced. The fitness professionals at Fitness4Everbody/JPMedFit consult with physicians, physical therapists, dieticians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, and other health care providers in order to set up a SAFE and EFFECTIVE exercise and weight control programs.
The limits insurance companies place on rehab time following surgery or injury are not always sufficient to get the patient back to full functional status. Fitness4Everybody/JPMedFit, working one-on-one, can step in to meet client’s needs. Periodically, progress reports will be filed with referring professionals.
I have always been a very physically active person, starting during my school years as a cheerleader and toe dancer. After teaching, getting married, having 2 children, I opened a business with a friend that involved a lot of moving around, working with my hands, and carrying heavy packages. When I wasn’t in an aerobics class I was walking several miles a day with a long limbed friend. Then about 10 years ago I started having difficulties walking, resulting in consultations with numerous doctors. Finally a hospital based neurologist made a diagnosis, a degenerative neurological disease, with no known specific treatment.
I first tried a top-notch expensive gym and worked 2 times a week with a top-level personal trainer. I was able to retain my muscle strength but she did nothing to improve my walking deficits.
I decided I should look into something else and that’s when I contacted Phyllis.
She did an evaluation, and started me on a program to increase strength in my lower body and improve my gait. In the 2 & 1/2 years working with Phyllis my walking has improved, my range of motion enlarged, and my hip muscle strength has increased. Since there is no known course of treatment for this disease, Phyllis and I have created a working exercise plan. She is not afraid to try something new, on the chance that it could be beneficial, but if it doesn’t work she moves on to something new. She works coaching me on survival tactics for a disabled person. She does not believe in the word “impossible” and is constantly looking for creative solutions for the difficulties associated with my disability. She is a strong advocate for my success and my ability to enjoy life with my friends, husband, daughters, and their children and families
I started working with Phyllis about 7 ½ years ago. I weighed close to 300 lbs and wouldn’t dream of going to a gym to work out. I also had an important job in Manhattan that meant I got up early and returned home late—tired. I also had back, hand and knee injuries that previously prevented me from exercising. I needed to find a Personal Trainer that could create an exercise program to help me overcome these issues.
Phyllis and I started slowly working around my injuries and body fat. With Phyllis’s support and encouragement, my consistent work-outs the weight started coming off and my muscles grew stronger. In 5 months I had lost 60 lbs. When I stopped commuting and started working from home my weight loss became more difficult. Phyllis turned up my exercise routine by setting up a circuit course and a periodization protocol to up my metabolism by muscle growth (muscle burns fat).
Phyllis made my exercise sessions fun by challenging me with new exercises and new equipment. When I started working from home I gained some of the weight back, Phyllis supported my efforts to use a new diet plan which I eventually found and started losing weight again.
When I started a new home business with irregular hours Phyllis was very accommodating to the changes in my schedule. She was constantly going to fitness conferences and coming back with new ideas and routines to build up my exercise routine. Now that I have lost 100 lbs, I feel better about myself, have more energy, and get to wear the smaller size clothes I have in the back of my closet.
I am a recently retired businessman with a history of Type 2 diabetes discovered 20 years ago. At the time of my diagnosis my doctor advised me that to control my diabetes and my blood sugar levels I must exercise on a consistent basis. Exercise would help me avoid the possible medical consequences of uncontrolled sugar levels.
I started exercising on a regular basis with no help from a fitness professional. After a major debilitating back pain episode that lasted for months I decided I needed help from a professional before getting back to exercise. I wanted to avoid any future injuries while getting the most benefit from my daily routine. That’s when I started working with Phyllis, who specializes in working with people with medical issues.
After an evaluation she created an exercise program of weight training, cardiovascular exercise and stretching. Included in this plan were a variety of exercises to strengthen my core muscles. to lessen the chance of any more back injuries.
Since this exercise plan was started I have not had another painful episode with my back. Knowing diabetics are more prone to over-use injuries she constantly varies my exercises and pushes me to vary my cardio vascular routine. The plus of this regular routine has been the drastic reduction of any of the usual medical complications associated with diabetes. I also keep to a proper diet and keep my weight in control. Since I exercise on my own I see Phyllis every 2 weeks to check on my form, alignment, and technique.
I find Phyllis very knowledgeable, up-to-date on fitness information and accommodating to my needs.

Over a year ago I was carrying a lot of packages and I tripped over a protruding brick on the sidewalk and fell down resulting in 4 hairline fractures of my pelvis and a fractured vertebrae. I have always been a very active eighty five year old and was determined to return to my pre-activity self. My husband is very physically active and if it wasn’t for his gray hair, people would think he was 30 years younger then he is. We love to travel, taking several active trips a year, many with elder hostel. After my fall I had six months of physical therapy, but still wasn’t where I wanted to be when physical therapy was finished. Phyllis listened to my goals and proceeded to set up obstacle courses to mimic difficult situations I might encounter. Phyllis taught me how to “LOOK, PLAN, AND DO”. She also worked on developing my muscle strength, improving my posture and gait, and utilizing a number of creative fall prevention strategies. After a year, when we were out walking, my husband said I was 100% back to where I was before the fall.
I have continued working with Phyllis on a regular basis to maintain the gains I have achieved. Now I am a year older and a 110% physically stronger with improved agility, and a diminished fear of falling. Now I can confidently enjoy my vacations alongside my active husband.
